Crafty Goodness | Crochet Heart I Love You Placecards

Feb
09

How much am I loving these little crochet hearts? Tonnes! Here is yet another sweet idea for using these little bits of crocheted love.

Sweet little placecards for the table. I was brainstorming ideas for decorating each place setting around our table on Valentine’s Day, so I set this up just to see how it would look, and I think I’m loving it. A simple I love you, because well, I love my family.

These hearts have a pinback, so my girls can wear this token of my love. But underneath this little pin is a little surprise.

Will you be dining at home Valentine’s Day? How will you be setting the table?

Crafty Goodness | Crochet Heart Confetti

Feb
08

I have been diving back into crochet lately and I have been enamored with these little crochet hearts.

So enamored in fact, I have made so many of them that they have become confetti, of sorts. Hand crocheted heart confetti. I really like that. So I decided I would package up a few in these little glassine bags that I have had since our wedding to give away to those I love for Valentine’s Day. (Oooh these would make cute wedding favors packaged this way!)

Add just a touch of decor tape to close the envelope.

And these little packages are ready to give away. I just love the idea of giving away a pocket full of love. A sprinkling of love confetti. I really just want to throw a sprinkle of these soft hearts high in the air above my girls so they can feel my love raining down on them. Heartfelt and homemade love in tangible form. And these, once you get the hang of crochet, are quite meditative to make.

If you are just starting your hooking career or picking it up again after a long hiatus, the first one may take you a while. I scribbled this little pattern out almost three years ago during my second phase of crochet experimentation. I ended up making a lot of bowls instead and a bunch of deformed hearts until I got the combo of stitches just right. I really wanted to make tiny little hearts, but crochet thread and I don’t get along very well. We still don’t, hence these hearts are made with worsted weight yarn and are about 2″ tall.

I haven’t really touched a hook since I jotted down this little pattern and made all those bowls (anyone want a crochet bowl?). I had all but lost my crochet abilities, well, almost anyways. To help refresh my memory, I downloaded the Learn to Crochet booklet from Lion Brand to use as a reference when I totally forgot how to make a half double crochet and double crochet stitch. It was like teaching myself to crochet all over again! Needless to say, it took me 45 minutes to make that first heart with all the reading and referring back to the book. But once I regained my crochet muscle memory, each heart took about 10 minutes. Granted, I am slow at crochet, you may very well whip one of these up in half the time. They are really that quick and easy.

So this year, I will be handing out little pockets of heart confetti for Valentine’s Day. I may even make a few extra to hand out to random strangers on the 14th to inject a little surprise love into their day. Yesterday I also had an epiphany thanks to this little blog post. It reminded me of the secret love hunts I used to create using folded heart notes, and I love the idea of using plush hearts instead! Even more, I love the idea of whipping up a batch of the little crochet hearts and tucking them in pockets and laptop cases and glove boxes for my honey to find throughout the month. Or year. We certainly do have an extra mason jar on hand in the cold cellar.

I’ll have a few more ideas about how to use these sweet little hearts in the coming days, but for now, want to try your hand at making them?

Crochet Heart Confetti

Materials

  • Any worsted weight yarn in your favorite colour.
  • Size G6 hook.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Scissors.

Finished Measurements

Approx 2 inches tall with worsted weight yarn. If you want a smaller heart and those tiny hooks and crochet thread like you, you can make much smaller hearts.

Techniques and Abbreviations

ch (chain)
st (stitch)
sl st (slip stitch)
sc (single crochet)
hdc (half double crochet)
dc (double crochet)

Note

You can tell I was only making bowls when I scribbled this pattern down as this heart is worked in one continuous spiral. There is no joining and no turning, just continue to work around in a spiral.

Crochet Heart Directions

  1. Ch 2.
  2. Do 6 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. Do not join. Do not turn.
  3. Moving around the circle, do 2 sc in each of the next 5 sc, ch 1.
  4. Do 2 dc in the next sc.
  5. Do 2 sc in the next sc.
  6. Do 1 sc in the next sc.
  7. Do 1 hdc and 4 dc in the next sc.
  8. Do 1 sc in the next sc.
  9. Do sl st in the next sc.
  10. Do 1 sc in the next sc.
  11. Do 4 dc and 1 hdc in the next sc.
  12. Do 1 sc in the next sc.
  13. Do sl st in the next sc.
  14. Cut yarn and bind off.
  15. Using a tapestry needle, weave in yarn ends.

Have fun crocheting your own little confetti hearts! If you decide to whip up some hearts, drop me a line and a pic, I would love to see your creations!

New To Shop | Love Rocks

Do you have a pre-tween or tween searching for just the right valentine to give her/his classmates? Something cool, not too cutesy or babyish, something rockin? I think I may be able to help! My daughter went Radio Gaga over this sheet of Love Rocks Valentines, and I think that your tween-ish kidlet may just do the same.

Oh yes, we are rocking out the Valentines this year! A little modern spin on some old skool classics.

The tween set may not be so familiar with the anthem “You spin me right round baby, right round.” But they do know another like-minded song. A little Round and Round with Selena Gomez for those tween fans!

Who didn’t love to receive a thematic mix tape from their crush?

Remember those massive boom boxes on the tarmac, beside the sheets of cardboard? Add a riff of the Black Eyed Peas, gotta get that boom-boom-boom for today’s kidlets.

The boom box is my daughter’s favorite, but then again she does a love for 80s break dancing movies. I’m praying others get the sentiment. Tell me you do!

If your pre-tweens and tweens want to rock their valentines, the Love Rocks Valentines are ready for ya! Print, cut, fill-in and hand out as-is, or use a hole punch to punch out two holes and slip in a heart shaped lollipop like we did. It’s all about incorporating candy in this household. You could even forget the lollipop and attach a Ring Pop or candy necklace for some good hard, rock candy goodness.

Freebies | I Like You More Than Chocolate

Feb

My eldest daughter has been talking about possibly, maybe, giving out mini chocolate bars to her classmates for Valentine’s Day. Or maybe the Smarties. It’s a struggle. I put together a cute pink eyelet valentine, but I suspect maybe it’s too cute and pretty for a 9yo happy little goth girl?

My youngest loved this one too, so I thought it would be perfect to share with you. Just in case you have some girlie girls who love pink and chocolate! There is ample room to place a mini chocolate bar (I buy mine in bulk) and for all kidlets to address and sign their name, even the kindergarteners new to printing.

Have your kidlet address and sign all the valentines first, then attach the chocolate bars. If you need help, just follow this simple tutorial.

You can get the I like you more than CHOCOLATE Valentines for free on Scribd!

And don’t worry, we didn’t forget the boys. There’s a less girlie version in brown and red just for them :)

Freebies | I’m A Sucker For You Valentine!

So it looks like my youngest daughter has decided she would like to give out lollipops for Valentines day. It really is all about the lollipops for her, especially the heart shaped lollipops we found just for the occasion. So lollipop covers were created, first for my new Sweet Love Collection, and then a second time according to my daughters’ specs. So we thought we’d offer a lollipop freebie to you, just in case your kidlets are loving the lollipop too.

“I’m a sucker for you Valentine!” on the front and space to address/sign on the back.

Have your kidlets address and sign before you start to wrap the lollipops. It’s next to impossible to write on a lollipop. And if you’ve never before wrapped lollipops using my lollipop covers, it’s super easy. Check out this tutorial for instructions from last year’s free Easter printables.

a day of fun and crafting

Jan
25

It’s been a great day around these parts! An early morning craft and gab session with some of my favorite girlfriends and an afternoon of crafting and paper cutting with my favorite daughters. I love how my girls tend to stick around the studio when I’m busy preparing a printable set for launch or testing out a table design for an upcoming client party. They like to get in and help, let me know what they think looks good, and sometimes just watch and stare at all the pretties that are lying around. I get excited by what I do and I love watching them get excited about what I do! I love watching them watch the process with eager eyes and open hearts. It’s something I love to share with them and I really, really LOVE having them see their mama happy and productive. It also inspires them to get crafty and how could I not love that!

Such a good, fun day. Want a sneak peek at what’s coming your way, and to my Etsy shop later this week?

Bright colors and lots o love! Off try and sneak a little bit of knitting in before bed. Tomorrow is going to be another busy, busy day!

i’m beginning to like my postman

Jan
20

Two days in a row the postman has brought me exciting mail! Yesterday my new bottlebrush trees arrived, and today a beautiful package from Bobbi Lewin on Etsy.

She packaged everything so beautifully. It was a treat to open this up! There was a surprise in every layer.

A sweet little red flower.

The enevelope was full of punched heart confetti.

And then the lovely crocheted heart banner!

Oh my sweet loverly goodness, it really is as lovely in person as I imagined it to be.

I can knit hearts, but I cannot crochet hearts and definitely not in such lovely detail. I will knit most things myself, but I will purchase my crochet goods everytime. There are just some things that look much better in crochet and delicate hearts are one of them. This garland really was the prettiest on all of Etsy! I saw it and thought, oh that would look lovely as the background decor for that Valentine’s Day project I have coming up, and in my front window. It really will, it is perfect. But for now, it is hanging on my studio mantel, just above my yo-yo mats and bottlebrush trees.

Oh sweet girlie goodness!
